Dear Parishioner,

By now, news about the UPDATE ST. PIUS X capital campaign has reached every household in the parish.  Opportunities to learn about the projects have been presented in the capital campaign booklet and many parishioners have attended one of the listening sessions, with one more round of sessions to come on the weekend of April 14th and 15th.  What can we do to help make the campaign reach its goal?  The first thing is pray to God that he will continue to bless this parish and its members with the good fortune to prosper and be charitable.

Last August the Parish Pastoral and Finance councils established the UPDATE ST. PIUS X capital campaign committee to present a financial plan, for the projects prepared by the Building and Grounds committee, to the parish.  A formal announcement was mailed to parishioners in January that plans were underway for this campaign.  This was followed by successive bulletin inserts announcing that the Campaign Booklet was being developed and would be mailed to all parishioners.

The committee decided that before the capital campaign could proceed, it was necessary to obtain a new commitment to sacrificial giving from parish members.  It did not make sense to run a capital campaign while facing a $180,000 budget deficit.  A total of 830 families responded with a generous financial commitment. We again sincerely thank all of you for this tremendous support and remind you to please honor your commitment.

We need to reach out to all of you for support for this additional campaign, over and above what you have already committed to sacrificial giving.  As you can see, our facilities are in dire need of upgrades.  We recognize that this is a real sacrifice for many families.  We pray that you will again do what you feel in your hearts to support the Parish.  We appreciate that some of you will do more than your share to make up for those that cannot.

The UPDATE ST. PIUS X building campaign contains capital projects amounting to $925,000.  Current plans call for completion between 2012 through 2016.  There are additional smaller projects totaling $96,700 that are part of the St. Pius X memorial program.  A memorial card for these items, as well as a pledge card for the UPDATE ST. PIUS X campaign, is included with this letter.

Your recommended share of the campaign total is 14.5% of your current annual sacrificial giving, per year for five years.   Please note on the enclosed pledge card that this can be paid over 1,2,3,4 or 5 years, depending on your current and future financial conditions.

None of the projects will start until we have sufficient funds.  We do not want to borrow money for these projects.  Many of the project descriptions in the campaign booklet are conceptual only.  The committees still have many details to work out.  You will be informed as to the start of a project and the exact scope of it before work begins.

May God bless all of you for your generosity and sacrifices.

Completed Capital Projects

During the past few years the parish has managed to complete several projects that have enhanced our property. These projects were completed through the generosity of parishioners with private donations and second collections. We again want to thank you for the generous contributions. You have stepped up when you have been asked and for that we are grateful.

In 2009, the Sanctuary and Chapel Ceilings were cleaned and stained at a cost of over $30,000. Funds were provided by second collections for this project.

In 2010, a new St. Pius X sign was erected along Marquette Street. This sign allows the Mass hours to be displayed. The St. Pius X name was also back lit. The landscaping around the sign was redone. The cost for this project was $11, 921. Funds were provided by second collections and private donations.

In the fall of 2011, the chapel skylight, which has leaked periodically since its construction, was removed. This was accomplished by volunteers from the Building and Grounds Committee. The use of the scaffolding was donated by Boldt and the staining of the wood was donated by Jim Springstroh (Jim’s Painting). Funds for materials only were taken from the general maintenance fund. The cost for this project was under $1,500. It would have cost St. Pius X at least $12,000 if the project was bid out.

The parish has limited funds to maintain its property. These have been managed well, however, we have reached a point where we can no longer defer improvements. The future projects are much more expensive. Since we do not want to go into debt, it is necessary to start a new capital campaign for maintenance projects.

Next month you will receive a Campaign Booklet, titled UPDATE ST. PIUS X, with project costs and details. There will be listening sessions in March at which you can get more information and express your thoughts about the projects.

Additional information regarding the projects will be available on the parish website. Be sure to look for this at

January Maintenance Projects

Two Capital Maintenance projects are planned to be completed in January. The first is the replacement of the carpeting in the North and West Narthex, and the second is the Church lighting up-grade.

The defective carpeting in both the West and North Narthex will be removed and replaced by Lee Carpets at no cost to the parish. Lee Carpets agreed to replace the carpet in both Narthexes as outlined in the manufacturer’s warranty covering the defects.

The lighting project was started in December, and is progressing toward a January completion. The lighting panel and modules had to be replaced because parts were no  longer available for the old relays that were going bad. At the same time the incandescent lights were replaced with more efficient LED and CFL lights.

This new system gives us several different lighting layouts for Mass and special occasions. The choir area can be lit up by itself, instead of requiring all the church lights to be on. The Stations of the Cross also can be lit up while the rest of the lights are off to save energy. Demonstrations showing the different lighting effects will be held as soon as the project is complete.

The lighting project will cost $14,620 and will come from second collections and material donations. The energy savings of the lights will cover our expense within a couple of years.

Additional information regarding the projects will be available on the parish website. Be sure to look for this at

God bless all of you.

Thanks to your generosity and support our Sacrificial Giving Campaign is a success. Our work to upgrade and maintain our facilities must continue as we announced last Fall, when we said there would be another campaign coming.

The new capital maintenance campaign, called UPDATE ST. PIUS X, will be held during Lent which begins on Ash Wednesday, February 22, 2012, and will conclude on Commitment Sunday, March 25, 2012.

Now that St. Pius X parish is debt free, we do not want to borrow money for capital maintenance. We feel that the best solution for the parish is to build up our Capital Maintenance Fund that will provide the funding needed for current projects and those that we will incur in the future.

Between now and the beginning of Lent, you will receive bulletin inserts with information regarding the maintenance progress that has been made, and need still remaining at St. Pius X. A detailed campaign booklet is being prepared now and will be sent to you mid February.

Listening sessions will be held after Masses in March. These will give each of you a chance to get firsthand knowledge of the projects and allow you to express your opinion.

Additional information regarding the campaign will be available on the parish website. Be sure to look for this at www.stpiusxappleton.com. The website will have a link to the UPDATE ST. PIUS X committee, which you can use to ask questions or give opinions. All messages will receive a response.

God bless all of you.

We invite you to spend some time here, learning about our faith and to obtain news about our parish.
