How to go to Confession

Begin with the Sign of the Cross

Priest: "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Priest: (In similar words)

"May the Lord be in your heart that you may know his love and mercy for you. What sins do you lay before the Lord?

Penitent: "Bless me Father, for I have sinned."

"My last confession was _________."

"These are my sins:"

(Share you sins.)

End with:

"For these and all my sins I cannot remember, I am truly sorry."

The Priest will offer comfort and counsel and assign you a penance.

He will then ask you to make an Act of Contrition.

Penitent: (In these words or other form you may have learned)

O my God, I am sorry for having offended you.

I have sinned against you and your church.

I firmly intend, with the help of your grace,

to do penance, to sin no more, and to love as I should.

Our Savior, Jesus Christ suffered and died for me,

in his name, dear Father, have mercy.

Priest (With his hands extended over the penitent):

God the Father of mercies.

Through the death and resurrection of his son has reconciled the world to himself, and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins. Through the ministry of the Church, may God give you pardon and peace, and

I absolve you of your sins

in the Name of the Father and of the Son

and of the Holy Spirit.

(Penitent makes Sign of the Cross.)

Priest: The Lord has freed you from your sins. Go in Peace.

Penitent: Thanks be to God.
