** Viae Crucis exercitium (Stations of the Cross) –
“A plenary Indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who devoutly make the Stations of the Cross. This devout exercise of the Station of the Cross helps renew our remembrance of the sufferings which our divine redeemer underwent on his journey from Pilate’s praetorium, where he was condemned to death, to Mount Calvary, where for our salvation he died on the cross.” (Handbook of Indulgences, Norms and Grants, #63)
***Votorum baptismalius renovation (Renewal of Baptismal Promises)
“A partial indulgence is granted the Christian faithful who renew their baptismal promises through any customary formula. When they do this during the celebration of the Easter Vigil or on the anniversary of their own baptism, they obtain a plenary indulgence.” (Handbook of Indulgences, Norms and Grants, #70)
To gain an indulgence:
- Be baptized and in the state of grace at the time the prescribed works are completed.
- At least have a general intention of doing so and perform the acts at the time stipulated and in the manner required.
- Be free from all sin, including venial sins.
- Perform the prescribed work
- Go to Confession
- Receive Holy Communion
- Pray for the Holy Father’s intentions (An Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be)
- Several Plenary Indulgences may be gained on the basis of one Confession; however, only one may be gained on the
- basis of Holy Communion and Prayer for the Pope’s intention.
- You are limited to gaining one Plenary Indulgence per day, unless the danger of death exists.
