Padre’s “Putt Putt” Golf ~ 2006

Here are some photos and commentary by Fr. Brian, of the mini golf course he built for the parish picnic.

It was a great success. Next year, he plans on building the back nine!!

The entire project consumed approximately:

50-2 x 4 x 8 studs ~ 40 wooden dowels ~ 1 can of stain ~ 50 golf balls ~

5 cans of colored spray paint ~ 350 square feet of green carpeting ~ 4 sheets of plywood ~

9 clay flower pots ~ 4 plastic planters ~ 1/2 box of nails ~ 40 metal fasteners ~ 6 rocks ~

15 yard ornaments ~ 7 bricks ~ 9 wooden numbers ~ 1 very old table

AND

1 oz of blue food coloring

Golf4

These homemade gold clubs, made especially for children and adults, right and left handed players worked well.

Over the course of the weekend, no club was permanently damaged. Elmer's glue works wonders!

Fr. Brian and Deacon Rick go head to head.

(Ask Deacon Rick just how this round went)

Golf6

Steady Fr. Tom!   Just look at that form!!!

Golf7

I wanted to make the first hole simple, just like putting in the living room, only with a couple of frogs in the way.

Golf9

The idea for the rock garden came when I found these super light rocks, perfect to make life on the mini golf course miserable. This one caused much trouble for players, although I did see a couple hole-in-ones on this one!

Golf10

This was tricky, but fun.

The poor turtle suffered 2 broken legs, but has been patched up and is resting comfortably. He expects to be back to work on the course next year!

Golf8

Did anyone get a hole-in-one on this one???

This was Fr. Tom's design. It took us longer to put this one together than it did the first 5 holes. Without a doubt, though, it was the most challenging of all.

Golf13

This one was as close to an "island" hole as I could get for now. Actually, it's not that difficult of a shot, just about a 5 foot putt. It's actually shorter than the first hole with the frogs, but just psychologically more threatening--and fun. There were many hole-in-ones on this shot.

Golf14

Originally I wanted to open the back end of this one to allow the shots to roll down the other side. For the sake of time, and to help keep the sanity among the players, I closed it up. Then, the rabbits made a home there and I think they actually may have made the shot easier. No rabbits were injured during this event.

Golf11

I found this table collecting dust in the rectory basement.

I hope it isn't classified as an antique. I actually wanted to use a bowling pin to swing over the hole.

Golf12

This was probably the highlight of the course --

hole #9.

First I thought it would be fun to insist that a player hit the ball up the ramp and over the water, into which many golf balls plopped. Then, at the last minute, I decided to put another hole just on the end of the ramp so a player could either shoot hard and hit over the water or shoot light and let it drop into the cup. Both ways proved to be just as challenging, and that crazy puppy plopped down in the fairway didn't help matters anyway. The dog has since been house broken.
