Server’s Dictionary of Terms

  • Alb: The white garment the servers, and all ministers wear.
  •  

  • Book of the Gospels: The large book that contains the gospel of the day.
  •  

  • Chalice: The main cup in which the priest consecrates the Blood of Christ.
  •  

  • Ciboriums: The communion bowls.
  •  

  • Cincture: The rope that ties the alb
  •  

  • Credence Table: The table in the sanctuary on which the items for mass are placed.
  •  

  • Cruet: The vessels that hold the water and wine.
  •  

  • Cups: (Communion cups) the other cups used for the distribution of communion.
  •  

  • Finger dish: The dish that the priest holds his hands over in order to wash them.
  •  

  • Lectionary: The book that contains the readings for the day.
  •  

  • Purificator: A cloth used with the chalice and communion cups.
  •  

  • Sacramentary: The book of prayers and blessings for mass.
  •  

  • Sprinkler (Holy Water Sprinkler): Used to bless the assembly with Holy Water.
  •  

  • Tapir: The item we use to light the candles
  •  

  • Thurible/censor: Used for incensing.
