Ministry of the Word

Ministers of the Word, or Lectors, are entrusted with proclaiming the Word of God to the assembly. Ideal lectors enjoy being in front of crowds and feel comfortable with public speaking. Lectors also voice the prayers of the community during the General Intercessions, or petitions. A prayerful spirit and willingness to practice at home are vital characteristics of a lector. Training, resources and workshops are available for beginners and veterans alike.

The Reader’s Prayer

Lord, invest me with your power

As I prepare to proclaim the marvel of your message.

I have prepared my readings,

I have tried to take within me, the meaning of what I am about to proclaim.

Help me to proclaim, not just with my lips, but with my whole heart and soul.

Lord, make me a hollow reed.

So your voice will beheard by all who hear me.

Free me from the excessive concern over my performance,

over the impression I create in this sacred action.

Convert my feeling of nervousness and turn my apprehension into an energy

for proclaiming your word with power and authority.

May your Spirit fill me so it fills the holy words that I proclaim.

Amen.
