The word liturgy comes from a Greek word meaning "the Work of the People." Liturgy is done by the entire worshipping community - sometimes acting together, sometimes with different members acting in particular roles. In the liturgy, each of us is called to full, active, and conscious participation. Some members are called to worship as a member of the Church assembled. Some others, by virtue of certain gifts, are called to act as servants, or ministers to the assembly.
All parish members are invited to become Liturgical Ministers. There are many ways to serve, and these are described below:
Ministry of the Eucharist
Extraordinary Ministers of Communion are entrusted with offering the Body and Blood of Christ to their fellow parishioners. Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers have a reverence for the Sacrament they distribute to the community.
Ministry of the Word
Ministers of the Word, or Lectors, are entrusted with proclaiming the Word of God to the assembly. Ideal lectors enjoy being in front of crowds and feel comfortable with public speaking. Lectors also voice the prayers of the community during the General Intercessions, or petitions.

Ministry of Hospitality
Ministers of Hospitality form two groups: Greeters and Ushers
Greeters: Are present at the doors of church to welcome those who are coming to worship with us. Greeters may be asked to direct people to restrooms, coat racks, or other parts of the building. They arrive early so as to be ready at the doors when people begin gathering, usually 15 minutes before Mass time.
Ushers: Serve as ministers of hospitality inside the worship space. They may be asked to direct people to restrooms and telephones. Ushers assist people in finding seats and urge people to make room when necessary. They also take up the collection during the preparation of the gifts. Ushers direct the flow of traffic during the communion procession. They hand out bulletins and straighten up church after Mass. Ushers work in teams of three or four.

Prayer Tree
Do you or a loved one wish to be remembered in prayer? On the table in the narthex is a box where you can drop in your request for prayers. Members of the Prayer Tree will keep you in prayer.
Servers
Servers assist the priest during Mass. Servers are required to have a knowledge of the Mass through training and practice, and have a courteous and reverent attitude.
Ministry of the Sacristan
Sacristans are those behind the scenes who lead in the setting up before Mass and cleaning up afterwards. This ministry is ideal for those who wish to serve but don’t like to be in front of crowds. Training is provided.
Ministry of Music
“Sing unto the Lord a hymn o f praise!” There are a number of ways to praise the Lord through song. There are three adult choirs, one youth choir and one hand bell choir. In addition, if leading the assembly in song is to your liking and ability, we have accompanists that play for our Masses and cantors who lead the assembly in song. Instrumentalists are also used when available.
Worship Committee
St. Pius X Planning Committee: Meets approximately once a month during the school year. It develops themes for the seasons of the church year, and ways to implement those themes during Mass. Members write opening greetings and petitions for Sunday Liturgy. Many resources and workshops are available as well as personal assistance from other members.
Art and Environment Committee: Uses themes developed by the Liturgy Planning Committee to decorate the church. Resources and workshops are available. Members meet as needed to plan and complete the decorating of the worship space.
Interpreting
Interpreting for the deaf and hard of hearing is available at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday Mass. Please call the parish office for the monthly schedule.
