To Prepare:

Please be present 15-20 minutes early to set up.

Prepare the finger dish & towel, the chalice with a purificator, and fill one cruet FULL with water and the other with a splash of wine, just enough for the priest and deacon.

Put the tabernacle key in place and take a visual count of the hosts in the tabernacle. There will generally be one or two ciboriums reserved in the tabernacle.

  • Pre-fraction, as evenly as possible, the hosts into the ciboriums and wine into the cups as noted on the table below.
  • In one ciborium place a large host on top.
  • Set the finger dish & towel, water and wine, chalice, and ciborium with large host on the counter for the servers to put in place.
  • Please carry the tray of cups and ciboriums to the sanctuary.
  • If needed, Check with the Priest (or Deacon) to get his input as to how many hosts and how much wine is needed.

--> Also, check the sacristy for any notes that may be there with further instructions.

PLEASE record the information that is requested regarding the host counts in the sacristy. (This is important as we are trying to get a good count as to how many hosts are being consumed at each mass.

How to determine how many hosts to use:

How many Hosts?

  • Check the Hosts in the tabernacle.
    • A full ciborium = 200 hosts

      ¾ full ciborium = 150 hosts

      ½ full ciborium = 100

  • Look at the average host count, posted on the sacristy wall, for the mass for which you are setting up.
  • For the 5:00 & 6:00 masses, add 150 to the average
  • For the 8:30 & 10:30 masses, add 200 to the average.
  • That number is how many hosts you need total.
  • For example at the 5:00 p.m. mass: If the Average = 450. Add 150 = 600
  • Subtract the number of hosts in tabernacle. (If there are 100 hosts in the tabernacle 600 – 100 = 500.)
  • Fraction 500 hosts into 5 ciboriums.

How much Wine?

  • 5:00, 8:30, & 10:30 Masses: Use 6 cups ~ SUMMER: 1/3 full ~ OTHER TIMES: Just under ½ full
  • 6:00 Mass: Use 2 Cups ~ SUMMER: Just over 1/3 full ~ OTHER TIMES: Just under ½ full
  • For larger crowds, we may elect to use more cups, depending on need.
  • If it is decided to use more cups, we will simply add them and find more distributors to minister them.
